Outdoor Fun – Build A Snowman And So Much More

When you peek outside and see nothing but a big blanket of white snow covering the ground, you know it’s time to quickly figure out something for the kids to do. Kids get restless quickly when they’re cooped up inside all day. And, what’s worse is, you’ll start getting frustrated with restless kids under your feet all day long and that’s not good! Snow games and activities take a special effort, but you’ll be glad you did it.

It’s time to turn off the TV, put down the video games, and get out the warm coats, mittens, hats, and boots and head outside for some old-fashioned snow games. Just in case you’ve forgotten what to do with a pile of snow, here’s a few suggestions.

Snowman: All you need to make a snowman is, well, snow! But, it’s the embellishments that make it really fun. Once you’ve rolled up three big snowballs ranging in sizes of big, medium, and little, grab a few items to create your snowman, or snowwoman! Start with a few rocks for the eyes and mouth, a carrot or short stick for the nose, and some longer sticks for the arms. If you have extra scarves and hats, you may want to add those so your snowman is bundled up and toasty warm. You can get as complicated or as simple as you want. Even Frosty the Snowman will be envious if you have very ambitious children. You may even want to create an entire Snow Family. This is an entertaining task that will keep kids busy for hours on end!

Snow Angels: Be sure to dress warm for this activity! In an area where the snow is soft and undisturbed, have your children lay down in the snow and move their arms up and down, and their legs in and out. Then, carefully help them stand up and step away. Turn around and look! See, didn’t you always know your little one was an angel! If you have garland you can even form a little halo to complete the scene.

Snow Fort or Igloo: What an inexpensive way to build a playhouse! Make sure you have good warm and preferably water-resistant mittens or gloves. Using small buckets, scoop snow in the buckets and press down firmly. Then, tip the buckets upside-down and tap to remove the snow “brick.” Carefully stack the bricks to form the fort or igloo. You can help your children design their structure by showing them pictures of an actual igloo or fort. As the walls are completed, your kids may get inspired to create snow-furniture. Provide them with a spray-bottle filled with water and food-coloring so they can “paint” the walls or furniture. You may even want to provide some hot cocoa to be served in their snow-kitchen!

Snowball Dodgeball: If you’re familiar with dodgeball, you’ll already know how this is played. Just substitute snowballs for a real ball and let the games begin! Choose up your sides, go over the rules, and start the onslaught of snowballs. Be sure to pack your snowballs just tight enough to fly, but not so tight that they become hard. You want the snowball to burst and go “poof” when it hits the other team member. You can also play more of a game of snowball tag, in which every kid stands on their own and is only out of the game when they surrender. No matter how your kids decide to play, be sure that you get out there and join in the fun. Running around in the snow is not only fun and exhilarating, it burns lots and lots of calories!

Snow Sledding: Even without a toboggan, sled, or a big hill, you can have fun sliding around on the snow. A large piece of cardboard and a snowbank can stand in for a sled and a hill. Look around the garage or house and find any larger pieces of cardboard, tarp, or even a big plastic snow shovel. You might even put the old plastic kiddie pool to work for the afternoon! If your yard doesn’t have a hilly area, a little snowbank can provide some fun “snow surfing” especially for the younger children.

Get out the hot cocoa, the camera, and the cold weather gear and head outside to enjoy some great snow activities and games. Bundle your kids up all nice and cozy, and before long they’ll be hootin’ and hollerin’ for all the neighbors to hear. They may even get some other kids outside to join in the fun, too!

Fun winter activities and crafts are a must if you need to keep your children entertained after a big snowfall. Check out all the fun at ShowKidsTheFun.com and make this winter an active and happy one!

In An Age of Technology We Can Still Raise Creative Children

Technology has invaded our toy stores! Seems everywhere we look, some new toy has emerged with bells, whistles, strobe lights, and flashing beacons highlighting every cartoon character currently in vogue. Heaven help the poor little neglected board game sitting there on the back shelf.

How does a parent counteract the numbing effects of all this technology? By surrounding their children with inventive and imaginative games and toys in their own homes. Creating an environment that teaches children to use their minds in new ways develops a lifetime that’s ripe with fun! A few basic ingredients for fun are listed here for you to get started.

Reading Material – A home full of books is a home full of interesting people. Your home should have bookshelves filled with both fiction and non-fiction reading materials. Kids should have a wide variety of choices so they don’t tire of the same types of stories or information. In homes where there are pre-school age children, we often find a lack of non-fiction books, opting for more storybook-style reading. But, even pre-school age children want to discover the world they live in. In addition, your children will learn about using non-fiction books as resources when they are in the higher grades in school. Having a nice assortment of fiction books on the shelves provides the child who is not eager to read, an opportunity to become interested in the escape or fantasy of the story long enough to get hooked because they find out reading is fun.

Building Blocks and Snap Together Toys – Building structures and knocking them down is a great way to spend precious time with your child. As your child grows, the building blocks and Legos become more sophisticated, but never lose their appeal and fascination for children. Faced with a pile of blocks, your child’s imagination swings into gear, anxious to create something unbelievable. You’ll see towers, cities, critters, houses, bridges, and all kinds of crazy things appear before your very eyes. Be sure to ask your child what the structure is, what it does, and even what name it has. If your child builds a city, spend some time asking your child to find the city on a map. Once located, ask your child about the people and places in the new city. Your interest and your child’s natural curiosity will create a learning experience that’s priceless.

Art Supplies – Bring out some crayons, paint, kid-safe scissors, paper, glue, and even junk mail, and go to town! Even sidewalk chalk can be inspiring to kids. Give your child a place to draw, cut, and paste and you’ll have a busy, content, and creative child for hours. Vary the art materials often to keep your child interested. You’ll never know what sort of art projects your child may enjoy creating unless you provide a lot of different things from which to choose. This does not have to be expensive. Reusing paper bags for drawing is one way to stretch a dollar when creating an art project. Look around your house and see what you have that could be turned into art. Newspapers and magazines headed for recycling may provide your child the inspiration for a new art project, and at a bargain. Please SUPERVISE closely if you don’t want your child to have a self-induced bad haircut or attach the dog to the artwork!

Felt Boards for Storytelling – An inventive and imaginative story is another great way for kids to reach beyond the world they see every day. Your felt story board can be handmade by hanging a large piece of felt on a sturdy, upright surface, or attaching the sheet of felt to an easel. You can also purchase a pre-made felt board at hobby stores. Then, you’ll need to purchase sheets of colorful felt to be cut into various shapes and sizes. For the youngest child, an assortment of basic shapes will spark their imagination and you’ll be surprised at just how many objects they can create; objects like monsters, houses, boats, cars, and maybe even their sibling! Your older children will enjoy cutting out and designing the felt into characters and props for their stories. Encourage your children to write their own stories, and then ask them to put on a production using the felt board. You can also create the characters and settings for a famous play or story. No matter what your child envisions, the time spent imagining the story is time well spent!

Musical Instruments – Whether your musical instruments are home-made with a comb and wax paper or store bought, making music is a wonderful way to spend the day together. Teach your child that music can be made from anything, from an old oatmeal container, to scratching two pieces of sandpaper together. You may want to listen to music together and try to pick out the instruments that are making the sounds. Get some sheet music or song books and teach your child about what the notes represent, and if you don’t know, learn together. Simple bells can be strung together to create a one-of-a-kind instrument. There’s even music in nature. Go on a walk and just listen to the sounds of the world — music is everywhere in our lives.

Dress-up Fantasy – Get out the old bridesmaid dresses… it’s time for dress-up! What better use for all those cast-off frilly things. Don’t forget Dad’s closet, too. Some of those old jackets and ties from the old days can certainly be comical on your little ones. Fill a large box or two with an assortment of clothing items and watch your kids dig right in. They’ll be sure to come up with the characters to go with their new outfits. Have a stage ready and waiting for that new production they’ll be asking you to watch. One reminder for the little ones – Kitty may not appreciate wearing that frilly hat. I know. That little scar on my arm reminds me.

Doll-houses – There is something very enduring about a child making up their own little stories as they move their dolls around inside a doll house. It’s so precious to see them play-act all the parts of the family members and it’s interesting to hear their view of the world through their dolls. Decorating your dollhouse is also an added benefit and creates a whole other method for sparking imagination. Using some wallpaper scraps, carpet remnants, bits of lace, or any other craft item you have laying around, your child can imagine the doll family fixing up their house just like you do yours. This fun could provide your family with an heirloom if you put enough love into it.

Puppets – You can make puppets out of socks, paper bags, felt, cloth, popsicle sticks, or just about anything you can get your hand into or onto. Use a variety of materials in all sorts of colors to make the characters interesting. If your child is very young, just a couple simple sock puppets with big smiles bring out the giggles. With older children, you may want to make a stage and have them share their puppet stories. Don’t forget to grab the video camera to capture your child’s genius!

Creative Kitchen – Kids of all ages like to participate in the kitchen duties. The youngest child always enjoys banging around in the pots and pans. Older children will probably enjoy rolling out dough or doing other helpful tasks. You can make those tasks fun and creative by taking the rules out of the recipe. If you’re cutting out cookies, have your older children design their own shapes instead of using cookie cutters. If you’re mixing batter, pour a few cups of puffed rice cereal into a large plastic bowl and hand your little one a plastic spatula and ask for a little help stirring their own “special batter.” Fill one cupboard full of creative and safe kitchen things and let your child know that anytime they want to have some fun, they have their own little supply.

Your imagination as a parent is what will help your child develop their own imagination. When you create an environment for exploring the world, you are giving your child an opportunity to use their mind. Technology will always be there, but a child’s imagination is a changing and growing thing. You’re making it possible for your child to soar!

Everything You Want to know About Home Schooling

Parents make their own curriculum and teach their children in ways that best suit the child. This is home schooling, in its most simplistic form. Before you decide to go in for home schooling, there are certain important matters for consideration. First off, meet with parents of other home schoolers. Find out the pros and cons of home schooling. Then ask yourself why you would want to adopt this method. This is a very important aspect, as the success of the program depends on the clarity and sincerity of your purpose.

Home schooling may seem like a lot of fun and freedom from the outside. However, things are seldom as simple as they seem. Home schooling is a lot of added responsibility and hard work. But, if successful, it will forge a strong bond of love and respect between parent and child, while providing your child with the best form of education he needs.

The term ‘home schooling’ basically refers to the process in which one or more children of not more than 2 families are instructed by parents or legal guardians, or a member of either household. The laws that define home schooling vary from State to State. The legal requirements for establishing a homeschool also vary with the State.

Home Schooling vs. School At Home Home schooling has become a viable option for many parents seeking to expand and improve their child’s educational experience. The public and private school systems are limited, for practical reasons, as to how far they can go to meet a particular child’s educational needs. With home schooling, on the other hand, the entire process is geared towards your child in a one-on-one manner. You can create a particular curriculum suited to your child, and teach in a way works best for him or her. It is for these reasons, not to mention the economic benefits when you consider the costs associated with private schools that many parents choose to homeschool their children.

When you decide to homeschool your children, you’re going to have to come up with a plan for how the subject matter is going to be taught, and a system to execute that plan. An important distinction you should make yourself aware of is a philosophical one of “home schooling” vs. “school at home.” The latter method is overly simplistic, and doesn’t take advantage of the benefits that home schooling can truly offer. While every parent is justifiably concerned about creating a disciplined academic environment, if you simply “teach at home” both you and your child will be missing out.

So let’s say you’re teaching science, and Galileo’s theory that when objects fall they increase their velocity at a standard rate, regardless of mass. That sort of thing might not resonate too well with a child when taught in a classroom, explained on a blackboard while sitting a desk. If you go outside and drop a tennis ball and a rock off the roof, however, your child will no-doubt be astounded when the objects fall at the same speed, and the lesson will stick. In a similar way if you’re teaching biology don’t hesitate to take the children outside to examine an ant colony or some plants.

Most children learn better in settings that they are comfortable in, and what setting is more comfortable then the home? So if your child wants to hear his math lesson while sitting on the couch, let him. If he wants to watch a movie in the evening, direct him to an educational one. By blurring, as much as possible, the line between “home” and “schooling” when home schooling your children, your children will benefit from a much more valuable educational experience than could be offered from the public or private school systems.

If your child has a question about a particular subject in biology, take him outside and show him nature at work. If he’s interested in a certain aspect of history, take him to the museum. One of the greatest things about home schooling is that it doesn’t have to be a regimented system: a day of learning that ends at 4 PM, Monday to Friday. When home schooling is properly implemented, your child is always learning. During a unit on Shakespeare for example, maybe you’ll decide to take him to a performance of the play

As a teaching philosophy, it’s important to think of the process as “home schooling” — this means that “home” and “school” become one: it’s not simply a case of school being conducted in a home environment. So instead of creating regimented lessons at set times – instead of your children sitting stiffly at a table while you give them lessons – be always ready to use the flexibility of home schooling to your advantage. If your child has a question about a particular subject in biology, take him outside and show him nature at work. If he’s interested in a certain aspect of history, take him to the museum.

Are you qualified to take on home schooling for your children? Teaching is a continuation of your own learning process. With the advent of the internet, information is aplenty. There are various books and resources for those interested in home schooling. Go through the various methods of home schooling and choose one that is most suited

Every state has its own laws regarding home schooling. For instance, in North Carolina, you must first file a ‘Notice of Intent’ to start a home school. In this you have to mention if the school is a ‘Private church’ school or a ‘qualified non-public school’. The persons providing the education are required to have at least a high school diploma. You have to maintain an annual record of the child’s attendance and disease immunization. Every year, the child is required to undergo a standardized test. Each student attending the eleventh grade has to take a nationally standardized test. These are the requirements in North Carolina, but it is enough to give you a good idea of what home schooling entails.

This doesn’t mean, of course, that in home schooling your children you should simply do whatever you want – there is no way to avoid the fact that the major subject areas must be studied closely – but keep in mind that many of these subject areas have a very broad range of exercises that can be done within them.

Think “Home Schooling” Not “School-At-Home”Think of how much more exciting your literature unit will be if you select a work that interests both you and your child – you will be able to enjoy the experience of good literature together, and have a much more valuable learning experience.

One of the greatest things about home schooling is that you are not in any way limited like you are in a standard academic environment.

What are the targets for each week? By setting these targets you can establish a timeline and curriculum that allows for effective home schooling. Clearly, one of the points of home schooling is its relative flexibility, and you by no means need to stick to a plan in a completely rigid manner, but don’t let this tempt you into avoiding one: although it may seem wonderful to have an entirely “organic” education for your children, this can easily go awry. If you constantly let your child’s learning be dictated exclusively by his or her interests, gaps will appear in her knowledge. Instead make a clear educational plan that allows for flexibility. Plan what your child is going to learn, but leave the “how she will learn it” some breathing room: as you begin the process of home schooling you’ll learn how your child learns best,

At first, the reading required in order to homeschool your children may seem daunting – after all, a teacher is only required to be knowledgeable on the subjects they teach, but you’re going to be teaching all of the subjects. Keep in mind, however, that you needn’t be an expert in every subject – one of the great things about home schooling is that you can learn together with your child. Instead, it’s more important that you have a good general knowledge of the history of the subjects being taught.

Home schooling Resource Developing Reading Skills When Home Schooling Your Child The extreme amount of flexibility offered by home schooling creates many educational benefits. One of them, of course, is that “home” and “school” become one, so that the educational experience doesn’t have to begin and end with the ringing of a bell. By incorporating educational activities into your home life as a whole, you child will gain a more valuable educational experience.

Reading can’t really be emphasized too much when home schooling your child. While there should be a good balance of subject areas taught throughout the teaching day, reading should be encouraged during your child’s free time. While it may be difficult to get a child into doing math or science work in his or her free time, reading is a different story.

Having Fun When Home Schooling Home schooling has many benefits for a child’s education. One of the most obvious is that it allows you, the parent, to tailor a specific education geared towards your child’s particular needs. It also allows you to teach in a style that suits your child — as we all know, different people learn better in different ways. When you decide to homeschool it is important to remember that as well as being a parent, you are now taking on the role of a teacher. This is, of course, not a responsibility to be taken lightly, and you have to make every effort to be the best teacher you can be.

For most children, the actual process of learning begins much before school. Many children already know their alphabets, the names of animals, colors and other more complicated stuff before they reach school. This is mostly due to the hard work of a member of the family who has taken the time to teach the child. Home schooling is just a natural progression from here. Instead of sending their

This concept needn’t be applied only to literature, think of things in science or music, for example that you’ve always wanted to learn about. If you make sure that you are interested in the subjects as well, your child will sense your enthusiasm and become more drawn into the subject, ensuring a much more valuable educational experience.

Next, it is time to consider the expenses of home schooling. It may cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to a few thousand every year. More importantly, you are also effectively shutting out any job opportunity for one of the parents. It is only obvious that one parent will have to stay at home full time to manage the homeschool. A home-based business however is a great alternative.

Home schooling Resource to intersperse these activities so that learning becomes fun. You may want to finish off the few hours of textbook learning in the morning and dedicate the afternoons to these kinds of activities.

To you. It helps if you know what kind of learning style your child has. Also, find out what your child feels about home schooling before you start.

When assessing your child’s abilities, do not allow emotions to overcrowd your rationale. Do not yield to the cries and tears of your child if he or she resists certain topics or subjects. If mastering these skills is necessary, then you as the teacher (and not as the parent alone) have to go over the topic over and over till it sinks in. When dealing with tougher concepts, the child may get restless and may even show frustration or belligerence. When the child is still young and unable to understand the importance of his lessons, it is your responsibility to see to it that the child develops the skill set necessary for future growth.
