A Quick and Easy Homemade Math Board Game
Kids love being in engaged in something that they don’t think is “work”. They love learning, but not always in the form of a lesson. One way to teach them, but also allow them to have fun, is with a math game.
Math games appeal to children because it makes learning fun. Children have always enjoyed playing games. A math games gives children the opportunity to learn and play at the same time.
Here is one idea that you can use to teach your child math. It will help your child remember basic math skills, and also bring some fun in to the problem as well. Combining fun and learning is a great choice for any child.
Find a piece of cardboard for your math board game. Come up with math problems that your child needs to learn from. If your child is struggling with subtraction focus a lot of the problems on subtraction. If your child is having a hard time learning fractions, use equations that deal with fractions.
Formulate sample math problems and come up with answers. You can get these on your own, find them online, or even better from your child’s teacher. Your teacher may be able to provide you with a list of practice math problems that would be good for your child to practice with.
You can use basic cardboard to create the board game. Draw squares along the edge of the cardboard to create a maze. If you want to get more creative, you can go back and forth to make a more fun design.
Color the boxes of the squares different colors. The colors you choose will represent the point system being used for the game. For example, yellow is one point, blue is 2 points, red is 3 points, etc. Leave spots empty for fun items, such as “lose a turn”, “move ahead 3 spaces”, etc.
You will move your piece forward according to what you roll on the die. Whatever color the player lands on, that is the number of points he or she can get if they answer the math question correctly. Use harder math questions for the higher points, and easier questions on the less point squares. The player with the most points at the end of the maze wins.
Brainetics is a revolutionary system that uses mathematics to teach you how to use two parts of your brain at the same time; one part processes information while the other part stores information.
