Five Things That Help Getting Admitted Into Graduate School
For some of you in an undergraduate degree, applying to a corporation is the standard path. Nevertheless, a small number of you aim to continue with graduate degrees, for example, a Master’s degree or other higher level degrees, such as a Ph.D.
The application process for graduate school is time-consuming and demanding, and unfortunately there exists a random element in it, since ultimately it is the admissions committee decides on who joins the degree.
However, there exist several things that you can control, and it is your job to make those benefit you a lot.
1 – Begin The Application Early
Life can get in the way of applying, but it is important to not just start working on the applications just a couple weeks before they are due. The process takes time, receiving recommendations takes more time, and it is important to ensure you have completed all the prerequisites, such as standardized examinations (i.e. GRE, Toefl, etc.).
2 – Receive a top score on your standardized exams
Most Grad programs ask for a standardized exam. For most sciences and arts majors, the GRE is an example. To get into a tier one university, top grades are preferred, but they are not the main deciding factor. This will be facilitated when you use study guides, and you can purchase such a GRE book online.
3 – Work on Some Side Projects
Although it is tempting to expend most of your time receiving full grades in your courses, most other people who have submitted applications to same university will also have top marks. You must distinguish yourself from others, which is accomplished by spending time with some extra ventures. Start a business. Get involved in university projects. Participate in various activities, and be a leader.
4 – Network
This is always mentioned, but never taken into consideration. A fundamental part of your application is your reference letters. You can ask anyone for a reference letter, but they may use an old letter, which is bland. It helps to have a recommendation letter that shows a deep understanding of who you are, which helps you to stand out, and which really can only be written by someone who really knows you.
5 – Double and Triple Check Your Paperwork
I sometimes see applications with basic spelling errors. Unless you are Albert Einstein, these mistakes will negatively affect your application. Get several people go over it with you.
And finally, submit the application. Now,, all you can do is wait. Good luck!
