This branch of engineering is involved with the study and uses of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. It appeared in the 19th century with the coming of the electric telegraph and electrical power supply and has been an established field since.

In addition to electronics, the field covers power, control systems, signal processing and telecommunications. Elsewhere, electrical engineering and electronic engineering are two distinct disciplines. The former deals with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control. Electronic engineering, on the other hand, involves the study of small-scale electronic systems like computers and integrated circuits. Another difference is that electrical engineers deal with the uses of electricity to transmit energy while electronic engineers study how electricity is used to process information.

To be an electrical engineer, you must possess an academic degree and major in electrical engineering. This is possible after four or five years of study. Depending on where you study, you may get any of the following degrees: Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Applied Science. The field usually includes subjects like physics, mathematics, computer science, project management and certain topics in electrical engineering.

But getting a degree is not the only requirement. This is but the first step in becoming an electrical engineer. In a lot of countries, graduates need to be certified by a professional body after completing certain requirements. Once certified, the engineer is known as a professional engineer in the United States, Canada and South Africa, chartered engineer in India, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Zimbabwe, chartered professional engineer in Australia and New Zealand, and European engineer in most parts of Europe.

What does an electrical engineering technician do? This person normally deals with electrical equipment and parts. He may create or help design, develop and manufacture electrical equipment. In addition, he may test or repair electronic equipment as well. An electrical engineering technician is often supervised by an electrical engineer or team of engineers. His duties vary depending on the needs of his employer. He may be assigned to inspect generators or transformers and, at times, he may be in charge of electrical workers or do the repairs himself. An electrical engineering technician may also help plan testing of equipment. He may direct the testing and keep a record of the information the tests reveal or he may offer recommendations to improve the efficiency of certain equipment.

Having Your Own Wind Turbine At Home!

Most probably, a majority of your home in your neighborhood and using the same paid energy source as you. This is either because they know how to conserve energy or budget their resources to afford it or simply because they have no other energy sources to turn to. But the truth is, there are several alternative energy sources that you can tap to without depending on any company to give it to you.

Solar energy is one popular alternative energy source. This is a renewable and clean energy source of power which can work very well to power your home. However, this is also a very expensive system to set up, since solar panels are not cheap and you will need quite a few of them to provide all of the electricity which the typical home needs.

Wind power is a viable alternative to solar energy which is far cheaper to implement. If you can set up several turbines and live in an area with constant winds, you may be able to generate enough power to take care of all of the electricity needs of your home. Even if this isn’t a possibility, a single wind turbine can still save you a noticeable portion of your monthly electricity bill.

Wind turbines are a relatively simple thing; the rotors are turned by the wind and this kinetic energy is converted to electricity which can be used immediately or stored on special batteries. Having your own wind turbines at your home is something which can be very beneficial.

Unlike solar panels, it’s easy to build your own wind turbines. You’ll just need rotors, a structure to mount them on and a generator to transform the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity. You may also need a transformer and batteries depending on your particular setup. All of these parts are readily available and inexpensive. Tutorials, schematics and other instructions can be found online which will walk you through the process.

You can get all of the parts online or even at your local junkyard among other sources. It’s possible you already have some of the supplies you’ll need just lying around! You can get creative with your wind turbine building and repurpose some parts which are gathering dust around your home.

Those who live in suburban or rural areas will have the best results from a wind power system, but even if you live in a large city in a rowhouse or other high density dwelling, a rooftop is all you need. If you have enough wind, you can use the power as it is generated and store the excess for a still day. It’s clean and wind is an inexhaustible energy source which matches or exceeds all of the benefits of solar energy.

Wind power is a great way to use clean, renewable, environmentally sound alternative energy; and the savings don’t hurt either. It’s easy to build your own wind turbine and you can always build more as you need them. The minimal expense and time they take to build is paid for many times over in energy savings.

UK Employers Urge More Focus On Science And Technology

It seems that a large proportion of employers – around 50 per cent – are finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable candidates for jobs which require skills in science, technology, engineering and maths, according to a survey for the Confederation of British Industry and the vocational qualifications body EDI.

There are fears amongst many employers that this problem will only get worse in the years to come unless action is taken now by sixth form colleges across the country. As London is where many of the best colleges are found, surely it will be here that these efforts to tackle skill shortages begin.

CBI director general Richard Lambert told the Guardian newspaper that “as we move further into recovery and businesses plan for growth, the demand for people with high-quality skills and qualifications will intensify.”

“In the future, people with qualifications in science and maths will be particularly sought after, and firms say it is already hard to find people with the right technical or engineering skills. The new government must make encouraging more young people to study science-related subjects a top priority.”

In the CBI survey, two thirds of employers believed that the government should be taking more action to promote maths and science at schools and A level colleges in London and across the rest of the UK. Half of all employers wanted official funding protection for Stem subjects at A level and 42 per cent thought that all three main sciences should be available as separate GCSE qualifications.

It has also been found that, just below graduate lawyers and managers, those who have completed degrees in sciences and engineering can enjoy the highest salaries for entry level jobs.

When they leave their sixth forms or A level colleges, London students should be confident they have the necessary skills to succeed in the workplace, respondents overwhelmingly agreed. The A level subjects considered the most useful by employers were business studies, maths, English, chemistry and physics.
