Creating Interest in Dark Fantasy Art
Should you place your character in a context that is expected of dark fantasy art? Where do you place your character? You may not know where you want to put it or you may not. As with any painting this can be done with both in harmony or contrast both in theme and colour.
If you want to create contrast you may want to do something different or unusual with the character. By putting them outside the norm you can increase the impact or discord which will cause the viewer sit up and take more notice. You have to be happy to do this though as not everyone will take kindly to change and some people may be immediately turned off the work or say it isn’t in keeping with dark fantasy art. There are a lot of unwritten rules about what is acceptable for a vampire to be able to do or where they are so you have been warned! That is not to say you cannot or should not explore the alternatives but just be aware that you may cause a storm of strongly held views.
If you are going for contrast you may want to do something different or unusual with your character. By putting them outside the norm you can add or increase impact or discord which will make the viewer sit up and take more notice. You have to be happy to do this though as not everyone will like the finished work and some people may be immediately turned off the picture or say it isn’t in keeping with that genre. There seem to be a lot of rules about what is acceptable for a vampire to be able to do or where they are so you have been warned! That is not to say you cannot or should not explore the alternatives but just be aware that you may cause a storm of strongly held opinions.
For example how do you feel about a nun as a vampire? Or a vampire on an alien planet? Or even shopping for blood along with Mrs Jones shopping for peas? Or if instead you are creating a werewolf, try werewolf going for a walk on a leash on a beautiful Saturday morning? Odd for a dark fantasy art theme, possibly but it is out of the norm and you can allow your imagination run wild and create better or different themes for your characters. A more sinister theme would work better and have equal or greater impact but these examples are designed to jolt you from the comfy norm of vampires in graveyards.
Also you can keep your background to blurs and colours or simple mono toned images. This adds impact to your chosen creature. It is also easier to paint and create. This is like putting in a photo out of focus. If your background is kept dark your highlights and character will stand out much more. Have fun and see what method works best for you.
The aim of this site is to help those who want to enjoy Dark Fantasy Art find everything they need. Dark Fantasy Art aims to help.
