The Most Impressive Action Films Of The Past Decade

When talking about action films in recent years, the audiences’ expectations and standards have changed (and been risen). When we used to welcome car explosions and fight scenes with stunt men, we have now come to expect the best of what CGI has to offer.

These are some of the best action movies to be released over the past few years.

When it comes to superhero movies, big action sequences are a given. However, the best superhero action movie award goes to The Dark Knight. The scene where Batman wraps a cable around the wheels a truck speeding toward him is an unforgettable sequence.

The other great superhero film from the past few years was Iron Man. This movie was more lighthearted than The Dark Knight, but was incredibly entertaining. The action scenes were unlike anything we have ever seen. When Iron Man is being chased by M16s, it is like a roller coaster ride.

No list of action films in recent memory would be complete without mentioning Avatar. This film was truly James Cameron’s action masterpiece. And this is coming from the guy that brought us the Terminator films as well as True Lies, one of the best action movies ever.

V for Vendetta was another action film that I thoroughly enjoyed. It had the right balance of seriousness and humor and used a lot of the technology made famous by the Wachowski Brothers in the Matrix films to wow audiences. The final fight scene, in particular, is breathtaking.

District 9 is not a traditional action film, however it delivered on all accounts in my opinion. There is minimal action and suspense within the first half of this movie, but it is all part of a story line ascent that takes off in the second half and never looks back.

As it stands, this is my list. I may have to save room for the Expendables, as it has the biggest action cast ever assembled and has been in the works for years.

A Black Belt’s List Of The Most Unforgettable Karate Films From The Last Decade

If you are looking for a great type of movie to watch, whether it is alone, with family or friends, a great genre to get yourself acquainted with is martial arts movies. Over the past few years there have been some amazing films brought to us in this genre from America, Japan, Thailand and of course, China.

Here is my list of the best of the best martial arts based movies that have hit theaters in the past 10 years.

One movie that I certainly have to give some love to is Jet Lee’s Fearless. This film is based on the true story of a Chinese martial arts fight during a dark period for the country. This is an incredibly inspirational movie with amazing visuals and might be Jet Lee’s finest movie to date.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would have to make any list about genre changing films. This movie was groundbreaking at the time, exposing us to people essentially flying and running across tree tops for the first time.

Another movie to include on this list would be Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Volume 1. Both movies in this story are great, but number 1 has the better fighting sequences. The Bridge against the Crazy 88 is one of the better fighting sequences of all time.

Another great movie to watch if you are fan of these types of movies is Hero. Jet Li stars as a nameless warrior and this film is told in a very cool sequence. Jet Li tells flashbacks of various battles, in a manner similar to the great Kurosawa film, Rashomon.

Another movie I’ll mention is Oldboy. This is a twisted movie and if you like psychological thrillers mixed with some awesome fighting sequences, this is a great one to watch.

This was not an easy list to create, and it is quite possible I will have to write a followup article with other great martial arts movies that didn’t make this cut.

5 Of The Most Memorable Cinema Releases Of The 80s

Never have so many box offices smashes and cult hits come out of one decade as they did in the 1980′s. You should of at least heard of these, if you haven’t been lucky enough to see them.

So many of these great movies haven’t been seen by those who are around the age of 23 or younger. This is a crying shame as these films deserve to be enjoyed by the younger generation too.

Many of these movies were way ahead of their time, and forerunners of many of the themes you will find in today’s movies.

There are 5 movies from the 80′s that I never tire of watching and are staples in my DVD collection. If you haven’t yet seen them there is nothing to stop you.

First of all I want to take you to Chicago and introduce you to the cult classic Adventures in Babysitting. Starring a young Elisabeth Shue, this was a smash hit in it’s time and is still a great movie.

If you enjoy a good sports comedy, then Major League will suit you down to the ground. It was a big hit and two sequels followed.

Even if you haven’t seen the Breakfast Club, chances are that you will have heard of it. It is one of the best known movies of the 1980′s and its story is still relevant today. If you only see one of these 5 movies, make it this one.

A young kid skips school and takes his girlfriend and best buddy to spend the day in the big city of Chicago. This is the simple plot of Ferris Bueller’s day off, but the great script and strong performances of a young Matthew Broderick and his co-stars really make this a movie to be watched over and over again.

If action is your thing, I only have two words to say to you, Die Hard. Yes, it’s hard to believe that the original was made so many years ago. It still stands proudly amongst other more recent films and wins hands down for sheer entertainment value. You must have been living on Mars if you haven’t seen this, and if you have just returned from the Red Planet, watch it today!

A Variety Of The Greatest Films From The Incredibly Great Thespian, Bruce Willis

One actor who always seems to come up in the discussion of great actors of my generation (early to mid nineties was my prime) is Bruce Willis. It is not just my generation however; Bruce Willis continues to churn out excellent high action movies to this day.

This article will cite some of my personal favorite roles that Bruce Willis has played over the span of his illustrious career.

One film that I certainly have to mention is The Sixth Sense. I am not usually a fan of M. Night Shymalan movies, but his first major motion picture was a smash hit, both at the box office and from an audience standpoint. This film is awesome and Willis is a major part of the reason why.

Another fantastic Bruce Willis film is Hostage. This film ended up being much better than I thought it would be, and much darker as well. This is a high suspense film and Ben Foster also stars and plays a terrifying villain named Mars.

Who can have a list of Bruce Willis films without giving some love to Armageddon. I am not always the biggest fan of Michael Bay films, but the man knocked it out of the park with this movie, as it is one of the greatest action films of its generation.

Another film that has to be on my list is none other than Die Hard: With A Vengeance. It was hard to pick from the four films in this franchise, but at the end of the day, the third installment of the wild man John McClane was my favorite.

Another awesome Bruce Willis movie that makes my cut is The Whole Nine Yards. Bruce did an incredibly convincing job in this crime comedy as the part of Jimmy “The Tulip” Tudeski.

These are just some of my favorite films from the prolific Bruce Willis, and I am sure there are many others which I may have forgotten.

Summer Activities To Be Part Of With The Family Outside

When it comes to the summer, everyone usually has the same idea of where they want to be: outside! Sure, when it gets too hot out we want to cool off indoors, but on a beautiful summer day there are few things better than being outdoors and enjoying the warm weather.

Anytime the sun is shining, these are some games and activities that my children and I participate in together.

One thing that is always fun to do if it is a hot day is cool off in the water. Whether you have a swimming pool, a beach, river or a lake close by, it is always an unbelievably refreshing feeling to jump into some cold water.

If you have a big enough backyard area, then one game that never seems to get boring is having a catch. Whether its with a baseball, Frisbee, nerf football or anything else, having a good catch can provide ample afternoon fun.

Every once in a while during the summer we love to have family barbecues. I am certainly no great cook, but you can buy some burgers and dogs from the local grocery store for cheap, make a few appetizers and have yourself an afternoon party. Having some great patio furniture doesn’t hurt either.

If you are simply looking to have a good time in the backyard, get a game of football going. If you don’t have the space for it, improvise and come up with a similar style of game that requires some level of cardio activity to provide you with a little bit of a workout.

If you have an area for a tree house close by, that is never a bad idea for good times. My father built us a tree house when I was younger and I honestly do not know what I would have done without it. That was our home base.

These are just some of the many activities you can do outside. Use your imagination and get out there!

Action Films From The 90s Which Help Shape The Modern Film Industry

When I think of action movies, I think of the 1990s. Films starring action icons like Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nicholas Cage set the tone for the action films today. This was before the John Cena’s and Jason Stathams. This was a time when action movies were at their finest.

The following are what I consider to be the best action movies from 1990 to 1999.

The first film I have to mention is the 2nd Terminator film, T2: Judgement Day. Arnold is at his best in T2 and the T1000 was one of the scariest villains I remember from my childhood.

It may have been 1999 when it came out, but that counts and The Matrix definitely makes the list. Starring Keanu Reeves as Neo, and Lawrence Fishburne in an iconic role as Morpheus, the Matrix combines many themes with a futuristic setting and awesome battle sequences.

Ironically, a film that spoofed all the action movies of the 90s ended up being one of my favorites. Of course, I am talking about Hot Shots: Part Deux. I have incredibly fond memories of this film and any time it is on (which is very rare), I feel the need to watch it.

When it comes to watching a 90s action flick with my buddies from high school, there is no movie we would rather watch than The Rock. Everything about this movie is awesome. I am not always a fan of Michael Bay’s work but he delivered with this one.

Face Off, starring Nicholas Cage and John Travolta is an Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) action flick at its finest. This movie has more memorable quotes than most action films of that decade for me. Both characters play each other, and the result is fantastic.

One final film I have to mention is Men In Black. Who would have thought that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones would make a great on screen team?
