Although decorating is not an obvious choice for family fun, there are many children who would love the chance to get involved. Kids tend to like anything that allows them to be creative and make a mess with painting, and they tend to love playing at being adult by helping parents in the home. Getting children to help with painting and wallpapering – under close supervision of course – can be great fun for all involved.

If you ‘re trying to think of the best ways to involve children in decorating the family home, then the obvious room to start off with is the children’s own. Although lots of parents will, when expecting a child, have gone to great lengths to decorate their bedrooms, once their offspring are able to form their own opinions, it follows that they’ll want to take part in decorating.

If you’re planning on re-decorating your kids’ room, then it’s a good idea to chat to them about what they’d like their room to look like, what things they want to keep from their current set-up, and what they would like to get rid of. Naturally, not all their ideas will be either practical or cost-effective, so you may have to exercise your parents’ veto, but it’s still worthwhile to have them take part in the planning process.

After you’ve agreed a plan with the children, the hard work starts. There are some dangers inherent in decorating, such as hazardous paint fumes, so you’ll need to make sure you keep an eye on them. Get them involved in the earlier stages of painting, so that if they make mistakes there’s still time to cover them up. This should give them a sense of pride which might help stop them wanting to draw on the walls at a later stage!

Lots of children really get a feeling of achievement from helping around the home with jobs like gardening and cooking, and so it’s logical that they’ll get the same from decorating, as long as they’re not left alone. You never know, in ten years, they might turn out to be master decorators, and you can sit back and let them do it all!
